Jean asks.... I am 62. Have short fine fair hair. Good condition now. No perm for 1 year but would like something gentle to make hair look thicker and easier to style. Also have fine highlights. What sort of perm would you recommend.
Answer by: Anthony Holland
I think a root perm would be the best option this gives a bit of a kick at the roots which gives the hair body. Also try styling your hair different like changing the parting or direction you wear your hair. This can also effect how thick your hair can look. You would probably be best asking your hairdresser about the styles as she will be able to help you more. Naz asks.... I would like to create the effect that Jordan has with her hair in this picture. I understand she has grown it out slightly. How do I achieve this? http://www.koolcelebrities.com/models/katie/katie12.shtml thanks!
Answer by: Anthony Holland
It does look as though its purely just highlights growing out. The best way to get this look is to either get your highlights done and let them grow out or if the look of your roots just get a few highlights through your parting then this should create more of a soft blend throughout. Diane asks.... I have mid to light brown hair. I wanted ivory coloured highlights as well as another mid blonde tone. I cannot remember the name of the product she used but she put me under the heat lamp for 20 minutes. Unfortunately, my highlights came out gold. The hairdresser said I must have a lot of red in my hair. Can you recommend either a product range and/or an optimum timing to achieve my ivory highlights?
Answer by: Anthony Holland
20 min under a heat lamp should usually be adequate for most tints. From what you say it sounds like she used a high lift tint and maybe a bleach or maybe a bleach based product like majimeche (L Oreal). The bleach sounds like the one that came out golden this could probably have been left to develop for a bit longer about 5-10mins until the gold has lifted out. Then if your hair is still quite warm an ash toner would probably lift out the final bits of colour then you should have the ivory colour you wanted. Jennie Foster asks.... My daughter-in-law and I are thinking of expanding our salon in Sheffield. How much would you recommend we charge other hairdressers per day for a chair (in order to cover our overheads and costs)? Many thanks for any help you can give.
Answer by: Anthony Holland
You could try the 50/50 method, which means whatever the stylist makes she gets 50% and you also get 50%. Whilst the stylist is building up a clientele the share will be low but on a good week you will tend to make yourself more cash than if you had a fixed rate for your chair. Mrs M Bartle asks.... Why is it I cannot find suitable styles for over 50s?
Answer by: Anthony Holland
That is a fair point you have raised. There are not any magazines with pictures of the latest styles for 50s plus. Have a look on the style gallery there are lots of pictures on there print a couple off and take them along with you when you go and have a consultation with the stylist. I am sure they will be able to point you in the right direction. Shyam asks.... When ever I grow my hair it becomes curly, is there any other thing which can straighten my hair. I have seen my friends who have straightened their hair and their hair has become unhealthy, is it so. Please suggest for me after straightening my hair what kind of hair style should I have!
Answer by: Anthony Holland
There are certain things you can do to make maintaining your hair easier. I would never recommend chemically straightening though from my experience the chemicals in them are very strong and quite damaging to your hair. If you do straighten your hair quite often it will become dry and split ends will appear. Split ends are unavoidable but can be kept to a minimum by getting your end trimmed about every 6-weeks. A good product for protecting hair when straightening is the Infratreat oil that you can buy on the site, this will protect your hair from the heat of your straighteners. If your are struggling for a style I would go to a reputable salon and ask for their advice as they will be able to determine suitability for your face shape and to suit your lifestyle. Mandy asks.... I have had long shoulder length hair all my live and I now need a change, my hair is quite thin, what kind of style should I go for?
Answer by: Anthony Holland
If your hair is fine and you want to make it look fuller then a classical graduated bob is they best option. It may seem a quite drastic change but you will be surprised how much fuller and shapely your hair can look if it is done properly. Also I find that an increasing amount of people of all ages are coming into the salon and asking for more classical cuts. Rachael asks.... I have dark blonde hair with highlights (light blonde & choc brown plus 1 other blonde. Hair has water in but we call it moisture this helps the hair have elasticity and movement the same as it has protein to give it strength. Claire asks.... I would wait a while until your hair has become in better condition after you have put some treatments on. Then I would recommend you go back to the salon to see if they can remove the colour and go back to your original colour. John Irving asks.... It should be long enough to braid now, ask your hairdresser if this is so. Answer by: Anthony Holland
If I were you I would go back to the salon and ask if they could put something on to counteract the orange in the colour. They should do this free of charge if you are not happy as using over the counter dyes is always risky.
