OVERDONE THE HAIR PRODUCTS?

Well don’t panic, there are many hair rescue products on the market that can help.

BOOTS BANANARAMA HAIR MASK

Smells good enough to eat! Its thick formula is easy to use and will turn your straw locks to silk in 15 minutes. Around £3.50 for 125 ml.

TIGI OATMEAL AND HONEY EMERGENCY REPAIR

Is lovely to use, really thick with a delicious smell of honey. Hair is soft, shiny and easy to style. Not cheap at around £10.00 for 150 ml but worth every penny.

WELLA VIVALITY INTENSIVE REPAIR MASK

Its easy to apply, absorbs well and works really quickly, leaving the hair soft and manageable in 5-10 minutes. Widely available and reasonably priced at around £3.99 for 150 ml.

WILL IT SUIT ME?

Here’s a quick guide to choosing a hairstyle that will suit your features, even if they’re not quite perfect!

PROMINENT NOSE

If you nose is on the ‘large’ size draw attention away from it with plenty of volume at the crown.

DOUBLE CHIN

Choose a bob that’s shorter at the nape and longer at the front to disguise a double chin or small chin.

LONG FACE

Break up a long face with a substantial fringe and a style that finishes above the chin.

LONG NOSE, LONG CHIN

Avoid creating more length by wearing hair away from the face, possibly with a side parting. Never wear hair very long and straight with a centre parting as this will accentuate a long nose.

NEED A LIFT NOW THE PARTYS ARE OVER?
If you’re suffering from mid-winter blues why not cheer yourself up with a colour change? Try Viva Colour from Wella, an easy to use crème based formula that will give your hair a rich, radiant colour with stunning shine.

The unique colour vitaliser in Viva Colour is made up of keratin proteins that are found naturally in hair. When it is added to the colour mixture if surrounds and stabilises the colour pigments, leaving your hair in superb condition. The vitaliser smoothes the surface of each hair so that the light reflects more, making it shine brilliantly. Viva Colour will even cover hair that is going grey, evenly and naturally, and will enhance not only colour but condition and shine.

HOW TO – GIVE LONG HAIR A BOOST

Divide the hair into sections first, and then blow dry each one in the opposite direction to the way the hair naturally falls. Blow dry the side upwards over the top of your head and blow the back forwards. This will create great lift and masses of volume. If static is a problem for you try an Anti-Static Rinse – Nicky Clarke does a good one, or even an anti-static hair dryer from the Babyliss range!

TOP TIP

Don’t smile when your stylist cuts your fringe! It will lift your face and raise your forehead. When you stop smiling your fringe may be too short!

Q & A

Q: I’m trying to grow my hair long but it seems to have stopped at one length. Why?

A: There are many factors affecting how long our hair grows including genetics. Some families have hair that will grow easily to their waist but for many, the strand will fall out long before reaching that length. Condition of hair is really important too as out of condition hair will be more brittle and prone to breakage. Hair that is ‘mid-length’ often breaks off with constant rubbing on jacket collars etc and stress levels or medication can affect hairs growth regime. Persevere with regular tiny trimmings of the ends, always use conditioning products and remember diet is important so include plenty of vitamin enriched foods. Good luck!

Q: I am really unhappy about my new hair style as I don’t feel it’s really what I asked for. Should I go back to the salon?

A: Firstly, be honest with yourself about the style before you go back to the salon. Did you take a picture to the salon? Did you discuss whether your hair would hold the style you wanted? Were you happy with it in the salon but have found it difficult since? If you feel that the stylist has genuinely ‘done-her-own-thing’ with your hair (as we know they sometimes do!) then you have every right to go back to the salon to get it put right. Most stylists will be happy to help you achieve the look you want – if you do encounter difficulty though ask to speak to the owner or top stylist. Try to explain calmly but firmly how you feel about the style, and what you would like done to remedy it. (This should be free of charge). If you feel you are not really getting through to the stylist however, it may be better in the long run to use a different salon. After all if you didn’t get what you wanted originally there is no guarantee that a second visit will help. Remember, all is not lost, the style will grow out and next time be sure to communicate really well with the stylist before she picks up her scissors!

TOP TIP

Always make sure that the hairdresser shows you a back-view of your style before leaving the salon in case you want any last minute adjustments before leaving.

Dear carol,
I am thinking about putting Henna in my hair and I have read your tips section on it. I just wanted to ask you if there is any way of removing Henna from the hair if I go off it later? (I have light brown hair) Or can hair be dyed back to light brown later on while it still has Henna colour in it? Please advise. Thankyou. Ms Niven

Dear Ms Niven

you must think very carefully before you decide to put Henna on your hair. It is a permanent colourant and can only be grown out or cut out if you do not like it. Also you cannot ‘go over it’ with an ordinary hair dye, only with another henna product. Henna is terrific if you want a dramatic change and does add superb shine to your hair but do think really carefully before going ahead.
