Views & tips from your side of the counter........
I have to admit to being really fed up this week. I seem to have come to an abrupt halt with sorting out a new wardrobe – I can honestly say that I’ve never returned so many items to the stores before, as I have recently. I was really disappointed with the spring and summer fashion this year. I can’t seem to find a single thing in either the right shape, right colour or right material. If I see a dress I like it’s in the wrong colour, if the colour’s right then the length is wrong.

I know we can’t all like every collection that appears in the stores but I don’t seem to like anything at the moment. I know the simple answer is not to buy anything but the annual holiday is looming and I really would like to have at least a couple of new pieces to wear. The most annoying thing is that I keep seeing other people in fabulous outfits but somehow they seem to allude me. I see a TV presenter in a certain pair of trousers and think perfect! They’re the ones I want! But try tracking them down. And when I asked a friend where she get her fabulous beaded handbag from it was “something I picked up on holiday somewhere”.

For weeks now I’ve been looking for a cute little dress to go over my new ‘must have’ white trousers but again nothing seemed quite right. And yet when I turned up to a girlie get-together this week there were three friends, all in cute little dresses over trousers, all looking fantastic. It all seems to point to a lack of talent – shopping on my part at the moment, perhaps it’s just a phase I’m going through or maybe I’ve got hormone trouble.
The problem is I’m a buy-things-to-match shopper so I now have a drawer full of non-returnable jewellery that I bought to go with all the outfits that I’ve returned. I’ve for three pairs, no less or turquoise earrings but I’ve returned all the turquoise outfits I bought as the colour really doesn’t suit me. I’ve a complete set of surf-style leather beads and bangles but since I’ve returned the slashed jeans and tie-dye top that I intended to wear them with I don’t suppose they’ll see the light of day either. Honestly, if this carries on I can see myself doing a car boot sale of brand new and unloved, unworn accessories just in time to start the process all over again for the new winter collections!

I didn’t know what to make of the back-handed compliment I received from my niece this week. Walking along together she linked my arm and announced “ooh, haven’t you got lovely soft arms for an old person”. I had to laugh.

Now I don’t claim to be in the first flush of youth but I’m not quite ready for a zimmer frame either. Still. She’s only eight and she did once describe her teacher as ‘quite old’ (I know for a fact she is 24 and straight out of college!) Although the remark was slightly better than the one she made when she was six – “do your nails still grow when you get to your age” she asked me. I must have a word with her mother!

I’m so glad to see that chunky bead jewellery is back on trend this summer. I absolutely adore beads – gone are the tatty plastic versions of days gone by and in a beautiful polished stones, glass beads and resins in the most beautiful colours.

I particularly love the really tactile chunky bracelets that are everywhere this season and the variety is amazing – from gorgeous pastels to really rich jewel colours.

I also love matching jewellery and it seems that everything is available in sets of earrings with necklaces and bracelets to match.

Even clothes are covered in beads this summer – necklines everywhere are trimmed in beads and shells which really adds a lovely feminine touch to outfits. And with the keen prices it’s possible to own lots of lovely items to match with all your favourite clothes.

So put away your gold for a while and just enjoy all the great choice out there!
