Jason Kearns joins our team of experts
and gives one to one hair advice

We are delighted to welcome the talented Jason Kearns to HairdressersUs.com as one of our team of experts. Direct from his fabulous Kearns-Davidson Hair and Skin Care salon in Toronto, he has already started helping our visitors with their hair problems and you can find his answers at the base of this article.

Jason Kearns has lived and worked all over the world, but it is his passion for the artistry of hair that has been the thread connecting all of his experiences. From his early roots as a young London based hairdresser, to his success as an artist and salon owner in Canada, Jason has shared his passion, talent and creative genius with the beauty industry. Equally comfortable in the salon and studio, Jason acts as both hair artist and art director to create stunning photographic works that mesmerize audiences throughout the world.

"I am passionate about great hair not about the trends that surround my industry. My strong foundations shaped me, sixties London, the era, its sensibilities, the graphics, the enthusiasm, the freedom to create. Evolution in hair is bigger then trends, the times we live in define a lot about hair, its continuous, ongoing and above all inspiring to me. I trained under the brilliant Harold Leighton an icon in the British hair industry - he pushed me and allowed me to be part of the creative process from the beginning"

Harold Leighton talks about Jason in his book Salon to Celebrity: The British Hairdressing Story. Publisher Seven Publications Paris France.

"Jason is one of my most successful juniors to make the grade and achieve international success, creating shows and photography like you've never seen before. How many of us can claim to have worked with David Bailey, Barry Lategan, Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, David Montgomery, Bruno Dyan, Hans Feurer, Serge Barbeau, Bert Stern, Walter chin, Shin Sugino, Babar Kahn, Myron Zabol….."

Jason says: "Discipline stems from belief and passion, commitment to what I do. I would not have the salon I have now, the huge cross section of clientele or the body of artistic work to look back on without discipline.
My clients often inspire me, the salon is an extension of how I tend to see hair, modern, clean lines, evolving as my clients evolve. The process of doing what I do is about finding a balance that does not date with time. I try to do the same within the salon. I am not loud with my work, it is not done with the purpose to shock, only to please the eye."

Jason answers some of your questions:

Q: I've attached a photo of a super hair color that I really want to change mine to. At the moment my hair is dyed light brown with a few highlights, darker underneath with coppery tones. My own hairdresser doesn't seem to know how to achieve the lovely color in the photo and I really need to know what an expert like yourself would recommend. Thanks Ruthie

Hi Ruthie - Sounds like you have a lot going on with color in your hair maybe you need to go back to one beautiful base color and have a good look at what you might want to add in the way of another color, keep it simple, less is more, and maybe work at getting a new haircut to show it off.

Q: Hiya, I have had hair extensions for around 3 months now and many of them have fallen out. I have noticed that my real hair appears a lot thinner than it was before the hair extensions were applied. My real hair is extremely fine now. The weakened bonds in my hair often come out in my brush along with my real hair. I'm really scared that my real hair won't grow back. Will it grow back eventually? Should I just have them all taken out again? Please help me - Pippa

Hi Pippa - Your real hair will grow back, but go back to the salon and ask them why the extensions are coming out, if done properly they should have stayed in if you feel you have had enough of them take them out and go for a new look.

Q: How often should I get my hair cut if I'm trying to grow it. At the moment it is up to my shoulders - Kate

Hi Kate - First set your self a goal to how long you want it to grow, but with long hair I would say a trim every 10 weeks depending on the condition of it. Look after those split ends while doing.

Q: How do I stop hair loss after a chemical relaxer process. I had worn dreads for over 5 years and maybe the relaxer traumatized my hair. Please help! How do I stop my hair from falling out? - Ebony

A: Hi Ebony - Could be two things, one is that your hair might have been over processed and it's causing breakage and will take its course, secondly you might be being too rough with it when doing. Either way you might want to consider cutting some of the relaxer out and giving it a rest for a while, and don't forget to condition it a lot, seek advice from the salon that relaxed it, they owe it to you.

Q: Hello, I'm Samantha. I'm 16 years old, I have naturally dark dark brown curly hair with brown eyes. I wanna explore a little and dye my hair really blonde. What shade of blonde do you think will go the best and will I be able to do it with out destroying my hair? Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks - Samantha, OHIO

Hi Samantha - After talking to my two senior Color technicians (Luke Kwaicznski and Kathleen McMahon) about your question, we are all in agreement about the general rule of thumb of only lightening no more than four shades above your own dark brown hair, and from your description we would suggest you stick with warm light browns and dark blondes, Igora Fashion by Schwartzkopf would be ideal for your request.

Q: I just got hair extensions last week. My hair extensions are frizzy and unmanageable. I have used various leave in conditioners. I am now regretting the extensions. What can I do? - Janet

A: Hi Janet - Without seeing it its hard to say what's happening but I think you need to go back to the people that did your extensions as soon as you can.
