Louis
Licari – King of Color
Elevated to celebrity status in his own right, Louis
Licari, the self proclaimed ‘King of Color’ is Guru
to a clientele list that reads like the call sheets
from Hollywood movies. In contrast to the fabulous
hair colors he creates; the New York Salon he opened
in 1987 is a mirrored monochrome backdrop. Black floors
and white walls form the perfect setting to stage
his latest full color hair upshot. Situated in Midtown
Manhattan, far above the madding crowds on the bi-level
15th floor – there is a private VIP styling room for
the stars and a team of experienced colorists and
stylists.

Foremost
Expert
During a career spanning over 25 years, Louis Licari
has worked his way up from shampooing at an upscale
salon to becoming owner and creative director of his
own. He opened a second salon in 1992, located on
the Beverly Hills coast and divides his time between
both.
A busy man, he has made numerous television appearances
such as NBC’s “Today” show and his work has been showcased
in all the glossy magazines: “In Style”, “Vogue” and
“Allure”. He is also the respected spokesperson for
Clairol’s professional product line and has many products
in his own brand. His ability to color hair has raised
it to a new art form, he understands the texture and
condition of his clients hair and has a flair for
knowing how to create the look that’s right for them.
Loyal followers appreciate the first class service
and cutting edge techniques.

An Artistic Masterpiece
Louis originally trained as a painter at Syracuse University,
which has given him an in depth perception of colour, the
effect of light and creation of special shades. He sees
hair color as art and says, “The right color can lift a
complexion and take years off a woman’s face.” He understands
how to create modern colors that work for the individual
women of today. Just because a color is popular at the moment,
doesn’t automatically mean it’s the one for you. A client’s
hair is a blank canvas, waiting for his special artistry
to work its magic.
"Hair color is a woman’s most important fashion accessory,"
says Louis, who is also a consultant for Revlon. He considers
skin tone, facial features and a person’s lifestyle when
selecting an individual effect.
Expert Advice
Licari gives actress Susan Sarandon a permanent all over
red color to enliven her natural hair tones. “Red,” he says
“is only right for a special few, but Susan has made it
her signature color.”
Louis says: “Don’t allow yourself to get stuck on a style.
I always tell women: Cross over! If you have the exact same
hair you had ten years ago, you have to re-evaluate and
have someone look at you again fresh. Worse, if you still
look like you did at high school or college graduation,
it’s time to rethink the way you look. Let the dead dog
die.”

Star
Treatment
The King of Color developed his own Ionic Color
Preservation System™, to care for his clients hair
and prevent color fading. It contains a specially
formulated Ionic Color Sealant™, a blend of vitamins,
minerals and antioxidants.
He has hand picked his fine team of salon professionals.
Stylists must all train for three years before they
can qualify to be a colorist and only one in 50
make the grade. At his New York salon, stylist Anthony
Dickey is also well acquainted with the stars –
looking after Sarah Jessica Parker and Minnie Driver.
It’s worth climbing those 15 storeys just to see
who’s who on the day! You can’t help feeling a million
dollars knowing your hair is going to make you soooo
5th Avenue.

Appointment
Although Louis is rumoured to work 10 hour days,
if you’re not on his regular client list, it can
mean a wait of anything up to six months to see
the man himself. However, the calibre of staff means
you don’t have to hang on to see the maestro. The
salon is highly rated and although prices are sometimes
considered high, the general consensus is that it’s
worth paying extra for the results. His stylists
recommend appointments every four to six weeks for
single process color and every eight to 12 weeks
for highlights. Other services are available such
as manicures, pedicures and waxes, they also require
booking in advance.
